Occupancy Permits Information

The city of St. Louis calls their occupancy inspections a housing conservation district inspection. 98% of property within the city of St. Louis is located in a Housing Conservation District. The inspection is a basic code inspection determining minimal interior building code violations, and meet minimum exterior standards under the International Property Maintenance Code. Whether you are buying a home in the city, moving, or renting a Certificate of Inspection must be obtained before occupancy is permitted. The inspection is not the same inspection a independent ASHI home inspector will perform and is not a substitute for a home inspection.

Occupancy Permits Information

A Re-occupancy permit requires that a minimum standard of safety and health inspection be conducted on all properties in unincorporated St. Louis County at the time of an occupant change. The ordinance that supports this requirement was put into effect in October 2005 for rental units and July 2007 for sale homes.

Re-occupancy permits are currently issued on this website only for Unincorporated St. Louis County.

Residents of municipalities should contact their respective municipal officials for re-occupancy requirements if any.
